Royksopp Genero TV Competition for the Technically Roused, or for those Roused Technically.

I went to Edinburgh this past weekend to do a reading of a play I’m performing in this summer at the Fringe.

As if that wasn’t enough for me to handle, I decided to do a quick short film whilst up there. I messaged my Norwegian actor friend Magnus Sinding to solidify my intent, and he came up with an explosion of brilliant ideas (after mumbling something about me being slightly insane).

Röyksopp  is teaming up with Genero TV to offer budding filmmakers the opportunity to submit a music video to go along with the song “Running to the Sea”.

I am deadline-driven.  I love the music. I like our concept. I am like a moth to a flame.

In terms of camera shots…
I credit Magnus for the idea that we go against the grain, forget about technological insecurity, and film on the most minimalistic means possible. Use an i Phone.

Interesting.  This is particularly rich when one looks at his Bachelor of Film Degree…

It gets better!

Tripod? No need.

Lets use a stick.

Clamps? Nah, that’s for wimps. Lets use an elastic band.

From the moment I arrived in Edinburgh, we took our elaborate kit, jumped in the car, and literally chased the sunset. The results are fantastic – nothing short of magical:

We both love genuine performances and strive for excellence in this regard. The results speak for themselves.

As my sister Alicia Woodside says in her marathon running context: “I’m not going for gold”. What I/we mean by this is that win or no win, the results are pretty stunning. The competition fuelled us to get out and do what we love.
Sometimes letting go – the focal point of our story – is the only way forward.
This applies nicely to our technological purge of any such “hindrance” be it a DSLR lag or a battery related issue. It’s refreshing to try once!Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 10.50.32 PM

… Plus, with fewer fancy focus pulls and VFX shots, one can really see our pleasant faces.

… I mean, one can really see our pleasant locations (CRAIGMILLER CASTLE, ARTHUR’S SEAT)!

This in turn, enables us to focus on the overall feel of the song, as oppose to getting hung up on particular lyrics. Actually, come to think of it, the “running to the sea” lyrics worked out OK in the end. 🙂
